Hepatitis A Vaccine

Hepatitis A is a serious liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). HAV is found in the stool of persons with hepatitis A. It is usually spread by close personal contact and sometimes by eating food or drinking water containing HAV. Hepatitis A is quite common in Pakistan.

Vaccine against Hepatitis A is available in Pakistan. Two doses of the vaccine are needed for protection, which should be administered at least six months apart. The first dose should not be given before one year of age. Therefore, the recommended schedule is first dose of Hepatitis A vaccine at 12 months of age and the second dose at 18 months of age. There should be at least six month difference between the two doses.
